Oculus Rift continues to draw headlines and this time they have announced that a legend has joined the Oculus Rift team. John Carmack, the “creator” of Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake has been appointed CTO (Chief Technology Officer).

A legend joins the Oculus Rift team

Oculus Rift is a virtual reality headset that pulls you deep into a virtual world of games, movies, or simulations of all types. Technologically it differs a lot from other virtual reality headsets and has received glowing praise from almost everyone. The final product is expected to launch sometime in 2014.

A few hours ago Oculus VR announced that the legendary John Carmack, who was the lead programmer on Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake, has been appointed CTO (Chief Technology Officer). He will be responsible for technology planning and development, including software. Actually John Carmack has been involved in the Oculus Rift project from a very early stage where he wrote the software that made the hardware work but that the fact he is now officially on the Oculus Rift team means that he can dedicate much more time to the project.

John Carmack has tweeted that his time division is now Oculus first, then game development at id Software and then Armadillo Aerospace; a company hoping to fly tourists into space.
