We had heard some chatter about it, and FIFA/Sony also recently experimented with 4K during the Confederations Cup. Now it has been confirmed. The FIFA 2014 World Cup in Brazil will be shot and broadcast in 4K resolution. Sony is the technical partner.
Fifa 2014 World Cup in 4K
When the 2014 World Cup kicks off next summer in Brazil you can expect to see some matches in amazing 4K resolution, confirms Sony and FIFA at the IBC conference in Amsterdam.
The final will be played at the Maracană stadium and will be shot in 4K
Only few details have been announced, and only the World Cup final has been confirmed for the 4K treatment so far. Sony and FIFA will take a decision on the other matches when the World Cup qualification ends. Sony is the official partner, which means that Sony’s 4K cameras will be doing all the 4K shooting. But it also means that Sony can push the “4K” name instead of “Ultra HD” that other TV makers prefer to call it.
Nothing has been said regarding an actual 4K TV channel, but it has been confirmed that the 4K content will be broadcast in some form, most likely in pubs, public places (on large screens) and in cinemas.
- ”The World Cup Final in 4K is the next natural evolution. We needed to be sure we had the technology that could deliver the trial this summer. We believe 4K will create a richer and more exciting viewing experience for viewers.” says FIFA TV director, Niclas Ericson according to The Hollywood Reporter.
