Google to reboot Google TV as Android TV

Google TV has not been a success, but Google is still determined to make it work. They will reportedly reboot Google TV as Android TV, update to the latest Android version, and likely integrate the wireless Chromecast system.

Google will rename Google TV Android TV
Google TV was launched in 2010 to much fanfare, but it quickly proved to be a fiasco. Logitech, one of the launch partners, nearly went out of business, but Sony is still supporting the project. Even Google has seemed completely out of touch with the TV market.


Chromecast is said to be a part of the new Android TV initiative – and it could come directly to your TV

Google hopes to erase its history and try again under a new name, according to GigaOm. Google wants to reboot the Google TV project as Android TV. The new name is not important, but it could signal that Google plans to dedicate more resources to the TV project. 

The Google TV platform is currently running on the Android 3.2, but will be updated to Android 4.2 this month. With Android 4.4 (KitKat) around the corner, we hope to see the TV platform keep up with the Android development instead of constantly being two or three generations behind.

Google has encouraged TV makers to integrate Google TV into Smart TVs, without success so far. With the prospect of having Chromecast built directly into Android TV, TV makers might reconsider things. Chromecast has great potential and could prove pivotal if Google doesn’t want Android TV to end up like Google TV.
