When you go to a TV store in the coming years you will see this logo. The new Ultra HD logo is just like the HD Ready logo; it defines the minimum specifications that a TV is required to meet to be sold as an Ultra HD TV. Unfortunately, many current TVs do not meet the requirements.
Ultra HD logo revealed
The logo and requirements have been specified by DigitalEurope, and the logo will be used throughout Europe. The same organization created the HD Ready logo back in the days. TV makers support the initiative and will start using the logo in stores and online soon.
DigitalEurope largely follows the exact specifications defined in the US by CEA. The requirements are as follows:
Resolution: Minimum 3840x2160 pixels at 16:9
Colors: Minimum 8-bit and Rec.709 color gamut
Signal processing: Must be able to process a 4K in up to 60Hz from start to end – no down-conversion
Input: Minimum HDMI 2.0 with HDCP 2.2 copy protection
Sound: Minimum PCM stereo
As is the case in the US, these are the absolute minimum requirements, and do not incorporate some of the more exciting elements of Ultra HD standard, such as better colors. Despite this, several current TVs sold as Ultra HD TVs do not meet the requirements – mostly because of missing HDMI 2.0. In the future, TV makers will not be allowed to sell these TVs as Ultra HD TVs with the new logo.
