Netflix expanded to six European countries in September, and is planning another major expansion in 2015 that could be even bigger. No countries have been confirmed, but the rumor mill points to Australia as well as south, central and eastern Europe.
Next Netflix wave in 2015
Netflix entered Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium and Luxembourg in September. The streaming giant has not shared subscriber numbers for its new regions, but says that engagement in some of them is “stronger than any other market we have launched”.
In 2015, Netflix will expand further in another massive push that will be “something on the order of this year, or potentially a little bit more”, according to CFO David Wells. Netflix says that there are 600 million broadband subscribers outside the US, and the company hopes to capture 10 percent of those.
Netflix’s CFO hinted that Asia is not part of the plans for 2015. Instead, rumors suggest that Netflix is looking to launch in Australia, where it has already hired agencies, as well as more European countries such as Italy, Spain, Hungary, Poland and Czech Republic. However, Netflix refused to confirm any countries.
Netflix currently has 53 million subscribers globally, making it the world’s largest video subscription service.
