Apple CEO, Tim Cook, has confirmed that Apple TV will start taking pre-orders for Apple TV on Monday and that the box will ship out to customers by the end of next week. By then the first apps for the new operating system, tvOS, should be ready.

Some developers, including Netflix, HBO and YouTube (Google), have had early access but everyone else got access to developer tools after the presentation in September. The App Store is now open and as of yesterday developers can submit apps for tvOS.

So far only a few companies have commented publicly on tvOS but as noted earlier by FlatpanelsHD several unannounced apps are revealed in Apple’s launch video. Yesterday, Plex said on twitter; "count us in on the Apple TV launch". Several game developers have apparently also submitted games for review. We try to keep an updated list here.

At the same time, Apple has released the final version of tvOS, the so-called “golden master” with a functional App Store. The App Store has not been available until now.

Apple encourages developers to release "universal purchase" apps that allow the customer to buy the app once and use it across iPhone, iPad and Apple TV. The company also reminds developers that the install package for any app can be no larger than 200 MB and that up to 20 GB of app content can be downloaded “on demand” once installed.

If you want to try developing for tvOS you must first register as a developer and then download Xcode 7.1 for Mac. You can learn more here.
