YouTube reportedly wants to offer movies & TV series

YouTube has held meetings with Hollywood studios to secure right for movies and TV series that will be offered through the YouTube Red subscription service, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Movies & TV series on YouTube Red

YouTube Red was launched in October as a subscription service. You pay $10 dollars per month for an ad-free YouTube experience with exclusive content from famous YouTube creators. The giant now wants to expand the catalog with Hollywood content.

According to the Wall Street Journal, YouTube has held meetings with several Hollywood studios and production companies to secure the rights to full-length movies and TV series. With this type of content YouTube could potentially challenge Netflix and Amazon.

The work is led by two former executives from Netflix and MTV who now work for YouTube. The company refuses to talk about its plans but the source believes that movies and TV series could appear on the subscription service as soon as 2016. YouTube is reportedly trying to secure a “robust collection” that will only be available if you subscribe to the Red service.

YouTube already offers movie rentals in certain regions without much success. If they begin to offer movies and TV series via subscription it will be an entirely new direction for the global service.
