The next major software update for PlayStation 4 will carry version number 4.0 and include a refreshed user interface, folders, new Quick and Share menus, and more. Sony says that it will also include unannounced features.
Software 4.0 for PS4
Sony has confirmed that software 4.0 will first and foremost include a refreshed user interface with new system backgrounds, a new notifications system, new icons, and just an overall polished look.

Another new feature is folders, which users have asked for since the launch of PlayStation 4. Sony will also improve the “Library” section with improved sorting features, making it possible to for example sort by ‘installed games’ or ‘purchased games’.
The Quick and Share menus will get a new look. The Quick menu is the one that you bring up by pressing the PS button on the controller. It will no longer be a full-screen menu but instead an overlay menu as shown in the screenshot below. It will include trophies, a list of online friends, and more. The Share menu will get the same new look and new features, including an option to upload 120 second videos to twitter.
At the moment Sony has only released Japanese photos of the new interface.

Sony adds that:
- “The 4.00 update has even more features that won’t be available in the beta, so stay tuned for additional info on what to expect.“
We can only speculate what that means but Sony is expected to launch a new ”PlayStation 4K” very soon so the update will likely lay the foundation for the 4K features.
Sony has yet to confirm a release date for the 4.0 update but says that participants in the beta program can download it starting today.
