When Philips announced its new TVs for 2017 in Madrid the other day, the company also teased how it plans to improve voice controls on Android TV.
Improved voice control on TV
Philips made it clear that it is a “proof-of-concept”. The system is not yet ready for consumers. At this time, the company ¨simply wanted to demonstrate how it is approaching voice technology.
As you can see in the video, Philips used one of its new Android TVs and the Google Home unit. Google Home is available only in select countries. The presentation started off with a sessions about Netflix HDR. Jump to 2:30 to watch the voice demo.
In the video you can see how the voice system can control Philips Hue lamps via voice commands and how you can play YouTube videos on the Android TV by asking for a specific song. It is also possible to adjust volume and playback controls on the TV.
Google has announced that the Google Assistant voice system is coming to Android TV later this year. However, your device still needs an always-on microphone and Philips is still determining the best approach in this area.
