Sony files for '8K HDR' trademark, logo

01 Dec 2017 | Rasmus Larsen |

The new ‘8K HDR’ logo appears to be the evolution of the current ‘4K HDR’ logo that Sony has used to promote its TVs since 2016. With CES 2018 coming up next month, there is a chance that Sony will unveil its first 8K TV. It is listed under 'light emitting diode (LED) displays’.

Sony 8K TV in 2018?

Sony filed for the ‘8K HDR’ trademark and logo in EUIPO (European Union International Property Office), USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) and JPO (Japan Patent Office) in October 2017. Sony has also submitted an updated version of its current ‘4K HDR’ logo that it is using to promote its TVs (as seen below) as well as other types of products.

The Japanese company has so far ignored the ‘Ultra HD Premium’ logo created by the UHD Alliance and similar initiatives in favor of its own logo. While the timing may be coincidental, it could also suggest that Sony is planning to unveil its first 8K TV at CES 2018 in Las Vegas next month.

FlatpanelsHD is first to report on the logo. There are no reports out of Japan as to what Sony is planning for 2018.

Listing refers to LED displays

There is a curious detail in the listing. Sony submitted its first application for the ‘4K HDR’ in May 2016 and listed it under classification ‘Televisions receivers’ only. The new ‘8K HDR’ and updated ‘4K HDR’ logo filed in October 2017 are listed under classification ‘Televisions receivers; light emitting diode (LED) displays’.

While the industry generally prefers to refer to LCD TVs as LED TVs, the very specific classification may actually refer to true LED TVs where each pixel is made out of light emitting diodes – no LCD panel required. Again, it may be insignificant but it could also suggest that Sony is planning to unveil TV based on micro-LED display technology. Samsung is rumored to unveil a 150” TV based on micro-LED display technology at CES 2018 next month.

For now, we do not have any more information to go on so we are just putting it out there. With CES 2018 coming up in a little over a month from now, we will soon know more.
