After having relied on LCD technology with LED zone dimming, and more recently quantum dots, in its high-end TVs for some years, TV maker Vizio will next year launch its first TV based on OLED technology. The rumor has swirled for some time and in a press release about the opening of its new OLED factory in China, LG Display (who supplies all OLED TV manufacturers with panels) made it official. - "The sharp increase in OLED TV demand is driven by a growing number of global TV brands manufacturing OLED TVs. The total number of those brands is now 15 worldwide and will reach 16 in 2020 when the largest TV maker in the U.S., Vizio, joins the trend," LG Display announced in a press release.Vizio will be the 16th manufacturer to embrace OLED technology for TVs. Others include LG Electronics, Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Toshiba, B&O, Skyworth, Grundig, and Hisense. Vizio has been one of the hold-outs, together with Samsung and TCL. The company will most likely continue to rely on LCD technology for most of its new TV models next year but the transition is underway. Samsung has reportedly also started the transition from LCD to OLED TVs, while TCL is developing a hybrid OLED and quantum dot display technology. Global sales of OLED TVs reached 2.9 million in 2018 and are expected to hit 3.8 million this year. Research firm IHS Markit predicts that the market will expand further to 5.5 million units in 2020 before increasing to 7.1 million in 2021 and 10 million in 2022. We will have to wait for more details but if we had to take a guess we would say that Vizio is likely to announce the TV - or TVs? - at CES 2020 in January. - Source: LG Display
