Sharp launches its first Android TVs in Europe

18 Dec 2019 | Rasmus Larsen |

Sharp has launched its first Android TVs in Europe. The new affordable BL2 series features 4K resolution and speakers tuned by Harman Kardon.

Sharp Android TVs

Sharp was, together with Sony and Philips, amongst Google's three launch partners for Android TV back in 2014. The TVs were launched in the US but did not reach many other regions as Sharp due to economic woes was forced to sell off the rights to its TV brand. Sharp is now trying to regain control and its comeback plan involves Android TV, the company announced at IFA 2019 in September. The first Sharp Android TVs to reach Europe are the BL2 series models. As part of Android TV users will have access to apps and games from the Google Play store, including Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, and HBO. The TVs come pre-installed with Android 9 (Pie) as well as built-in Chromecast and Google Assistant.

Sharp's BL2 models feature LCD panels with backlit LED and 4K resolution. The TVs will be available in 40 to 65 inch sizes. They also feature 35W speakers (plus subwoofer) tuned by Harman Kardon. Additional Android ranges will launch next year. With Sharp rejoining the group, Google has gained another partner in Europe where Sony, Philips, TCL, Hisense and others are also selling Android TVs. Since the TV project was launched in 2014, Google has struggled to build momentum in Europe against competing TV platforms such as Samsung's Tizen and LG's webOS.

Sharp's BL2 series of Android TVs are available now in Europe starting at €340 / £315 for a 40-inch model. The 65-inch model will be available from early 2020, the company said. Follow the links below for more information on prices and dealers.
