Panasonic has provided an update on its plans to fix 4K120 and VRR over HDMI 2.1 on the 2021 'JZ' OLED models as well as the 2021 JX940/JX970 LCD models.
HDMI 2.1 firmware fix
When Panasonic announced its 2021 TV line-up earlier this year, it said that while 4K120 and 4K120 VRR would be supported at the time of shipping, both would "only display half the vertical resolution".
The company has now shared a timeline for the fix. Both issues will be fixed with a firmware that should be available by the end of year. This applies to all HDMI 2.1-compatible 2021 Panasonic OLED and LCD TVs.

- "Panasonic confirms it will introduce a network download towards the end of this calendar year which will solve 4K2K resolution issue for both Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and High Frame Rate (HFR)," Panasonic said in a statement to FlatpanelsHD. "This network download will be for 2021 European models which support HDMI2.1 (all JZ models, and JX940 and above)."

The firmware update will be required to take full advantage of 4K120 signals, with or without VRR, from game consoles like PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
