LG releases firmware to fix auto-dimming in dark scenes on 2023 OLED TVs

23 Mar 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

The overzealous algorithm that erroneously dims over time dark scenes with minimal movement has been fixed with LG's latest firmware update for 2023 OLED TVs (C3, G3 etc).

OLED TVs are designed to dim panel brightness over time if static content is detected in an effort to reduce the risk of burn-in / retention. Unfortunately, such algorithms – known as "Auto Static Brightness Limiter" (ASBL), "Global Sticky Reduction" (GSR) or "Temporal Peak Luminance Control" (TPC) in LG-lingo – tend to be a bit overzealous at times.

FlatpanelsHD's investigation in 2018 into a matter where Sony OLED TVs detected a small static element in the picture such as a scoreboard during a sports match or gaming HUD and then went on to erroneously dim the full OLED panel, prompted Sony to improve its algorithm on OLED models such as A1 and AF8/A8F.

A similar issue, which affects dark scenes with minimal movement, has been present on LG OLED TVs for years. Buyers have noticed it especially in long-lasting dark movie scenes. LG has for years failed to respond to reports detailing the problem.

Good news... for 2023 models

Now there is good news. With a new firmware (ver. 03.10.19), LG is finally addressing the situation, according to a video by HDTVTest. However, it applies only to 2023 LG OLED models such as C3 and G3 at this time. Firmware 03.10.19 is available now for 2023 LG OLED TVs as an over-the-air update from the TV's menu. LG has not commented on plans to address the issue on 2022 and earlier OLED TV generations. LG C3, G3 and other 2023 models will launch soon, and you can expect FlatpanelsHD's in-depth reviews in the near future.
