Samsung adds cheaper 98" 4K TV to its 2023 line-up

12 Apr 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

In addition to the previously announced 2023 models, Samsung has confirmed that a mid-range 98-inch Q80C with a 4K LCD panel and LED local dimming will launch later this year.

Samsung's 98-inch Q80C is meant to compete with TCL's affordable 98-inch 4K model that currently sells for £3600 / €4400 / $6000 and Sony's upcoming 98-inch 4K X90L which will be priced at £9000 / €10000 at launch. You can check which brands offer 90+ inch screens in the TV Database.

98Q80C is not Samsung's first 98-inch 4K LCD TV. The existing 98QN90A (2021) and 98QN1000B (2022) will both carry over to 2023 as more premium options, both branded "Neo QLED".

As for 8K, Samsung launched its first 98-inch model in 2019. It will for the first time be refreshed in 2023.

- "(Samsung) will also be adding a 98-inch model to its Neo QLED 8K lineup, providing immaculate colour reproduction and lifelike level of detail on a scale that offers a cinematic-like experience. It will offer upgraded sound with Dolby Atmos and Q-Symphony 3.0 to further envelope viewers in every single scene," said Samsung Canada, although we do not yet have details on this 8K model.

The new, mid-range 98-inch 4K model was formally announced by Samsung this month, without providing details. Samsung Europe has subsequently confirmed to FlatpanelsHD that it will be part of the Q80C range and that it will feature FALD (full array local dimming) – the number of dimming zones was not disclosed. Q80C will also have a slimmer design than last year's Q80B, said Samsung. Last year's Q80B used IPS LCD in some sizes and VA LCD in others sizes. The 98-inch Q80C for 2023 will use a VA LCD panel made by TCL CSOT. Samsung Display no longer produces LCD panels in any form.
