DTS:X arrives on Disney+ in May with 18 Marvel movies, Queen concert

15 Apr 2024 | Rasmus Larsen |

Disney+ is finally fulfilling its promise to deliver DTS:X audio, alongside Dolby Atmos, making it the first streaming service to do so starting on May 15.

Disney+ introduced its first titles in the expanded IMAX Enhanced aspect ratio back in November 2021. At the same time, the streaming service announced plans to offer DTS:X audio at a later date.

After an additional two and a half years, we now have a confirmed launch date: May 15.

- "Following its record-breaking success as the biggest IMAX exclusive event release ever, 'Queen Rock Montreal' will make its global streaming premiere May 15 on Disney+ as the first concert film available with IMAX Enhanced sound powered by DTS. It will debut alongside the availability of IMAX Enhanced sound for 18 fan-favorite Marvel films that will immerse subscribers in the action like never before," announced Disney+, IMAX Corporation and Xperi-owned DTS in a joint pres release.

DTS:X and Dolby Atmos

Disney+ will continue to offer content in Dolby Atmos, and users will likely have the option to choose their preferred soundtrack, similar to how IMAX Enhanced titles were offered at launch in 2021. DTS:X has previously been limited to Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray discs, but as part of the IMAX Enhanced initiative, Disney+ is bringing it to streaming world. A new lossy codec will be utilized to deliver DTS:X over streaming, as opposed to the lossless DTS:X found on discs.

Additionally, it will be supported on certified DTS:X-enabled AV receivers from manufacturers like Denon, Marantz, and JBL. DTS:X streaming will be available worldwide on Disney+. The 18 Marvel movies that will also be available in DTS:X on May 15 are:
