The Disney+ app is finally available on Meta Quest, marginally improving Horizon OS's limited selection of media apps, but key limitations remain.
Apple and Google have opened a new front in the platform war, holding back their VR/AR apps from competitors' platforms.
In this new platform war, Meta has largely been sidelined due to its limited relevance in the media landscape, while Apple has pulled ahead with native visionOS apps for Disney+, Apple TV, HBO Max and Paramount+.
Disney+ on Meta Quest
Meta Quest owners are now finally getting a little attention from Disney with the release of the Disney+ app, first promised back in September.
- "The Disney+ app is now available on the Meta Horizon Store, and Disney+ subscribers can stream all their favorite movies and shows on Meta Quest 2, 3, and 3S in the US," announced Disney. "(It) will release internationally in early 2026."
This effectively doubles the number of native VR streaming apps on Horizon OS, from one to two. The Prime Video app recently became available as a native Horizon OS app.
Disney teased additional VR-related news soon.

No 3D movies, 4K HDR not possible
Disney confirmed that movies and series can be streamed in up to 4K HDR, either HDR10 or Dolby Vision, for all Disney+ subscribers in the US. However, Dolby Atmos audio requires Disney+ Premium.
However, Meta Quest headsets use low-end LCD panels that cannot display 4K or HDR, topping out at roughly 2K per eye and SDR.
Unfortunately, 3D movies are not offered. This is due to a hardware limitation across Meta's headset lineup, as none of them support MV-HEVC required for 3D 4K movies. This is only available from Disney and other studios on Apple Vision Pro (see 3D movie database).

It is possible that 3D movies could be offered in 1080p SDR on Quest, but that remains to be seen. At launch, Disney+ simply does not offer any form of 3D on Meta Quest.
On the plus side, the Disney+ app supports downloads for offline viewing and includes support for the expanded IMAX aspect ratio.
