Following Sony and TCL, LG has abandoned the 8K TV market. LG was the only brand to offer 8K OLED TVs in addition to 8K LCD TVs.
8K TVs have proven to be a flop, undermined by high prices, scarce native 8K content, misleading 8K upscaling marketing, and the fact that the best 4K TVs outperform them in picture quality.
Despite tepid sales, a handful of TV makers persisted, and Sony even enabled 8K support on PlayStation 5 Pro in late 2024, but to little effect. Instead, the move highlighted a major problem: Many 8K TVs do not accept a compressed 8K signal over HDMI 2.1.
LG pulls the plug on 8K
LG launched its first 8K OLED TV in 2019 with the 88-inch Z9. The 8K OLED model was refreshed in 2022 with ZX, adding a 77-inch option, and upgraded annually until 2023 with Z1, Z2 and Z3.
Z3 carried over into 2024 and 2025 but was officially discontinued in late 2025, with no successor announced for 2026. LG Z3 was the only 8K OLED TV available globally.
You may recall that there was even a brief industry dispute over true 8K resolution, with LG promoting its 8K OLED TVs as 'Real 8K' in contrast to Samsung's 'Neo QLED' 8K LCD TVs, which sacrifice effective resolution (subpixel rendering) to improve viewing angles.
Panel maker LG Display has confirmed to FlatpanelsHD that development of 8K OLED panels has also been put on hold, although it is ready to restart it, if market conditions change.

On the LCD side, LG introduced its first 8K model in 2019 with SM99. The 8K lineup expanded significantly in 2021 with more affordable options, but was scaled back in 2022, skipped entirely in 2023, and effectively concluded in 2024 with QNED99T that was made available only in select regions.

QNED99T carried over into 2025, but as of early 2026 it is listed as out of stock and discontinued at major retailers. The discontinuation has been confirmed by FlatpanelsHD's sources. Remaining units may still be found, but only while stocks last. No new 8K LCD models have been announced for 2026.
TCL, Sony, Hisense and LG
Following the exit of TCL in 2023, Sony in 2025, and now LG, Samsung is left as the last remaining player in the 8K TV market.
Samsung's plans for 8K in 2026 remain unclear.
Hisense also appears to have largely, if not entirely, abandoned 8K TVs.
Panasonic explored launching 8K TVs but ultimately abandoned the plans after seeing the lukewarm market response. Philips has showcased 8K prototypes but maintains that the market is not ready.
