Apple launches new 5K monitors: One with miniLED & 120Hz ProMotion

03 Mar 2026 | Rasmus Larsen |

Apple has refreshed its Studio Display and Studio Display XDR monitors, both featuring 5K resolution. The pro monitor adds miniLED backlighting, up to 2000 nits brightness and 120Hz ProMotion.

Both remain LCD-based monitors, despite Apple's broader transition from LCD to OLED across other product lines, including iPads and soon MacBooks.

What sets them apart from many competing monitors is the premium finish, tight integration with other Apple devices, Thunderbolt 5 connectivity, and the option of a nano-texture glass coating.

Apple Studio Display

The new 27-inch Studio Display, priced at $1599 and available from March 11, features a 5K (5120x2880) IPS LCD panel. It delivers up to 600 nits of brightness and supports the DCI-P3 color gamut. Apple positions the monitor for professional workflows ranging from photo and video editing to coding and music production. It includes two Thunderbolt 5 ports with up to 96W charging, Apple's 12-megapixel 'Center Stage' camera with Desk View. which simultaneously shows the user and a top-down view of the desk, a three-microphone array, six built-in speakers and two USB-C ports

Apple Studio Display XDR

Apple is also updating its 27-inch Studio Display XDR, which it originally marketed misleadingly as "beyond HDR". With only 2304 miniLED local dimming zones, up to 2000 nits peak brightness and 1000 nits full-screen brightness, it still falls short of true HDR picture quality – for that Apple OLED monitors will be required – but it brings other enhancements. The 2304 zones will still produce visible blooming artefacts and will heavily restrict black depth and peak brightness in practice Also read: All the new OLED monitors launching in 2026 In addition to DCI-P3, Studio Display XDR supports Adobe RGB and covers 80% of Rec.2020, according to Apple, which positions it for video editing, color gradin, filmmaking, design, print, animation and medical imaging. A key addition is 120Hz ProMotion with a variable refresh rate from 47 to 120Hz, promising smoother scrolling, lower latency and improved gaming performance. Update: Apple says that Mac models with M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra, M2 and M3 support Studio Display XDR at up to 60Hz. Only Macs with newer or more powerful Apple Silicon chips support 5K 120Hz, including M2 Pro/Max/Ultra, M3 Pro/Max/Ultra, M4 and M4 Pro/Max as well as M5 and M5 Pro/Max.

- "Today, Apple introduces new DICOM medical imaging presets and the Medical Imaging Calibrator to enable use in diagnostic radiology, allowing radiologists to view diagnostic images directly on Studio Display XDR," Apple said, adding that it is pending FDA clearance. Studio Display XDR also features a 12-megapixel camera with Center Stage and Desk View, two Thunderbolt 5 ports with up to 140W charging, and two USB-C ports. It comes with a tilt- and height-adjustable stand. Studio Display XDR will be available starting March 11 at $3299 without the nano-texture coating.
