Philips abandons Google TV for Titan OS

23 Mar 2026 | Eric Beeckmans |

The most surprising announcement at the 2026 Philips launch event was the decision to forgo Google TV on all models, which will now feature Titan OS. Here is what you need to know.

No specific reason was given for the change, though several arguments were given:

Titan OS requires less system resources, TP Vision (Philips) can provide input that steers the development, it has more control over the looks and features of Titan OS, and it allows them to explore new revenue streams. The latter likely means that they get a bigger cut of any ad-revenue, we do hope however that Titan OS will stay away from non-content related advertising.

Abandons Google TV and Google Cast

TP Vision has been using Titan OS for a couple of years now, but we were surprised to learn that this year even the 2026 OLED 8 and 9 series will ditch Google TV in favor of Titan OS. That switch inevitably comes with some features lost and some gained. Among the things lost, we feel that not having an official Google Cast implementation is one of the main issues. Apple Airplay (and Homekit) will be available, but Android users will have to rely on a third-party app to cast to the TV. Our experience is that this will work for some use cases, but not for all. Now that Google TV, Samsung Tizen and LG webOS have official Google Cast implementation, we feel Titan OS is missing out.

More apps on the way

Inevitably the app library will be more restricted than what Google TV offers. Large international streaming services are almost all available, including YouTube, Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, HBO Max, Viaplay, DAZN, Blacknut, Boosteroid, Crunchyroll, Deezer and Plex. Still missing but planned: Apple TV ("spring 2026"), SkyShowtime and Spotify. It remains to be seen if local services are well represented. Gamers who use the Xbox, GeForce Now or SteamLink apps are out of luck. As alternative you can hop over to Blacknut and Boosteroid game streaming services.

Titan OS features in 2026

Titan OS will be launching new features during the year. A dedicated sports page will show a row with all currently live and upcoming sports events, brought by different streaming apps like DAZN. Further rows will be sorted per sport, and every event will be labelled live, soon or replay. On the homescreen, there will be 'Continue Watching'. You will also be able to add items to a 'Watchlist', essentially bookmarking items for later viewing.

In terms of free content Titan OS offers a broad selection through FAST channels, but also via Plex or Tubi. If you are looking for new content, Titan OS will show whether items are available in different services. The homescreen can be customised by removing unwanted apps from the favourite list. This will also remove the recommendations row for that app. General recommendations may still select content from all apps though. Later, Titan OS plans to introduce a feature where you can toggle recommendations of specific services off, so they are removed from all recommendations. Through a partnership with TMDB, you will get recommendations such as Top Movies and Top Free Movies.

Titan OS also plans to offer optional user registration though which you can receive promotions and which will later make possible the use of different user profiles. While Titan OS certainly looks the part and feels quite nimble during operation, our main concern is the roadmap and speed of implementation. Many of the features mentioned here were already promised at the launch of Titan OS, a couple of years ago. We certainly hope that users do not have to wait two or three more years to reap all these benefits.
