James Cameron: 3D is a superior format – wants to convert 'Aliens'

07 May 2026 | Rasmus Larsen |

The man behind Avatar is far from done with 3D – or High Frame Rate – which he believes is a superior format for entertainment. He is considering converting Aliens into 3D.

James Cameron's Avatar: Fire and Ash was released in 3D with High Frame Rate (HFR) and his new Billie Eilish concert film, also produced in 3D, premieres this week.

In fact, all of Cameron's 21st-century films have been released in 3D, cementing him as one of the key figures behind the format's modern resurgence.

Began at Universal Studios

In an interview with Letterboxd (link), Cameron said that his fascination with 3D began with Creature from the Black Lagoon, which led to the production of the Universal Studios attraction T2-3D: Battle Across Time. This most closely matches our own organic sensory apparatus. This is the way our brains are wired. This is what our entertainment should look like," Cameron told Letterboxd. With his two most recent Avatar films, Cameron has also used HFR – double the frame rate from 24 to 48fps – to elevate the 3D experience. - "I don't see (high-frame rate) as a format like (the way) 70 millimeter is a format. HFR is not a format in my mind. It's an authoring tool to improve the stereo," Cameron added.

3D conversion of 'Aliens'

Back when 3D was revived in cinemas, Cameron was critical of poorly executed conversions in films such as Clash of the Titans and Alice in Wonderland. Now he is considering a 3D conversion of his 1986 classic Aliens. However, it is worth noting that Cameron in 2010 emphasized that "my personal philosophy is that post-conversion should be used for one thing and one thing only, which is to take library titles that are favorites, that are proven, and convert them into 3D". - "We are thinking about converting Aliens (to 3D), because I know now that the tools are so much better than they were for creating depth maps. We're probably going to wind up converting Aliens, which will be a fun experience," Cameron told Letterboxd. The full interview can be found via the source link below. - Source: Letterboxd
