Apple already upgrades users' purchased movies to 4K and other premium formats free of charge, and now the same treatment has been extended to TV shows.
The first 49 TV shows have been upgraded to 4K SDR in the Apple TV app, according to Sigmund Judge on X, who spotted the change.
Among the upgraded titles are Mad Men, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, The Twilight Zone and The Hunting Wives. They have been upgraded in the US, the UK and possibly other regions – check your library.
Apple's free 4K upgrades
Apple began upgrading users' purchased movies to 4K and HDR free of charge alongside the launch of the first Apple TV 4K in 2017. It later rolled out free upgrades to Dolby Atmos, HDR10+, and most recently 3D 4K. Apple also adds bonus content – extras – at no additional cost.

The extension to TV shows, which are available through the Apple TV app only in select countries, comes amid renewed debate over digital ownership following PlayStation's decision to abandon physical game discs.
Free upgrades and bonus content are among the perks of digital purchases. We are not aware of Apple ever having removed users' purchased movies or TV shows from users' libraries (previous cases have turned out to be misunderstandings). Purchased titles remain in users' libraries even after being removed from the store and can still be downloaded for permanent storage, albeit only in 1080p.
