Review: Samsung launches 98" Q80C to compete with TCL's 98" model

|

There is renewed competition in the segment for very large TVs. Samsung's 98-inch Q80C is now available in the US, the UK, Germany and elsewhere.

China's TCL has attracted quite a bit of attention after it managed to make a 98-inch 4K LCD TV affordable last year. It is currently selling for $5000 in the US, £3500 the UK and €3700 in Germany.

Now Samsung is joining the race with its new 98-inch mid-range Q80C. Samsung launched a high-end 98-inch QN90A model with 4K resolution in 2021.

Samsung Q80C

Samsung recommends a viewing distance of 4 meters to the 98" Q80C

It is an 100/120Hz LCD TV with 4K resolution. The LED backlight has zone dimming but Samsung has not confirmed how many zones there are. It also features HDMI 2.1 ports for use with PS5 and Xbox at up to 4K 120Hz. The TV is less than 5 centimeters in depth. More expensive than TCL's

At launch, Samsung's 98-inch Q80C is significantly more expensive than TCL's 98-inch 4K LCD TV, despite Q80C using the same VA LCD panel produced by TCL CSoT. As is customary, we anticipate a steep price decline later in the product cycle. Sony will also soon launch a 98-inch 4K LCD TV as part of the X90L range – based on the same panel.
