LCD panels are manufactured on large factories from mother substrates that are cut into smaller LCD panels. Research firm DisplaySearch reports that some LCD manufacturers could benefit and see reduced costs by switching to 36.5-inch LCD panels.
36.5 inch flat panel TVs?
When you talk about LCD panel production you are also talking about LCD plant generations. An eight generation (8G) plant works with larger mother substrates than a 7G plant. These mother substrates are then cut into smaller LCD panels.

DisplaySearch says that most new 8G LCD plants can reduce costs by producing 36.5 inch LCD panels. A 36-5 inch panel is more cost efficient than 32, 40 and 42 inch LCD panels, DisplaySearch underlines.
LCD manufacturers such as Samsung, LG and Sharp all have huge LCD plants but have not commented on the matter at this point. However, DisplaySearch suggests that we might see the new size class in the future.
Just a few years ago took the 40-inch segment outgrew the 42-inch segment that was popular at that time. Samsung also recently changed their plasma sizes to 51” instead of 50” and 59” instead of 58” with their new 2011 plasma TVs.
