LG & Samsung drop all OLED patent lawsuits - again

24 Sep 2013 | Rasmus Larsen |

Samsung and LG report today that they have decided to end all of their OLED patent disputes and accusations of espionage. Back in February, they said that they had intentions to do the same, but the truce did not last for very long so we hope that the good intentions can last this time.

Samsung and LG drops lawsuit about OLED - again

The saga of OLED patents, accusations and lawsuits has been going on for some time (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) and it actually started back in 2012. Besides LG and Samsung, Chinese panel makers also seem to be involved together with several other parties. Despite some of the accusation still hanging in the air, the two South Korean companies have decided to bury the hatchet and instead focus on cooperation.

Samsung and LG will engage in talks about cross-licensing key patents in OLED technology, and might even start to cooperate or share knowledge or technology. We hope that the two giants can reach a peaceful solution this time, and get new OLED TVs out on the market as soon as possible.

Samsung and LG were first to showcase OLED TVs in January 2012, but Sony and Panasonic joined the race one year later in January 2013. The two Japanese manufacturers are also cooperating on OLED technology, and could take on Samsung and LG in the OLED field in the near future.
