A new system update for PlayStation 5 has fixed the issue with stuttering VRR gameplay that users have been complaining about for months.
VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) is meant to eliminate stuttering, among other things, by unlocking the framerate and synchronizing the refresh rate in real-time between the console and TV.
So it is kind of a problem when VRR actually causes stuttering, as has been the case on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro for months.
Users have reported noticeable stutter after around 30–40 minutes of playing games in VRR mode, such as The Last of Us 1 and 2 or Diablo 4, suggesting that the PS5 loses sync due to some error introduced with a software update – VRR worked correctly on PS5 in the past.

New update fixes the VRR issue
The latest system update (version 25.04-11.40.00) for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro fixes the error, according to many users on Reddit.
Despite not mentioning it in the release notes, Sony confirmed the same to Digital Foundry:
- "Sony PR contacted me yesterday to confirm that - as already detected by some - the latest PlayStation firmware resolves the VRR hiccup issue."
It is good to see VRR finally working again on PS5 consoles. VRR works as intended on Xbox Series X.

VRR can be enabled from the PS5's menu if your TV or monitor supports VRR
