Vizio reveals 2020 line-up of 4K LCD TVs with FALD, HDMI 2.1, FreeSync

Vizio has announced its LCD TV line-up for 2020, spearheaded by the P-Series Quantum X. The new models feature HDMI 2.1 with VRR, FreeSync, and 4K resolution.

Vizio 2020 LCD TV line-up

At CES 2020, Vizio unveiled its first OLED TVs along with a full line-up of LCD TVs. The company's most advanced LCD TV for 2020 is the P-Series Quantum X - or PX - that will be available in sizes from 65 to 85 inches. The flagship LCD TV range features a full array local dimming LED system with up to 792 dimming zones (depending on screen size), 4K resolution, Vizio's new 'IQ Ultra' video processor, a 'ProGaming Engine', and support for four HDR video formats (HDR10, HDR10+, HLG and Dolby Vision), with several of the new TVs also being equipped with a quantum dot film in the LCD stack to widen the color gamut.

- "With incredible 64-bit image processing and 1 GHz CPU, the all-new Vizio IQ processors add multi-step algorithms to more accurately upscale HD/FHD to 4K resolution, reduce noise and artifacts, and intelligently enhance detail and contrast with pixel-level brightness adjustments. The new 3D color engine works in concert with auto calibration to improve color accuracy and create an image that is true to the artist's original intent. The premium IQ Ultra processor also enriches picture processing with AI and machine learning capabilities," the company said.

Vizio claims that its PX model can hit 800 nits full screen brightness as well as up to 3000 nits peak brightness. However, at just 792 dimming zones it is unlikely to reach its peak brightness in most movie and game scenes. With almost 8.3 million pixels in total, each LED dimming zone covers approximately 10,500 pixels. Content creators typically reserve peak brightness levels for small bright objects in the picture such as headlights, stars, lamps or reflections, forcing an LCD TV to either lower its brightness significantly or suffer heavy blooming. - "Our mission has always been to make cutting-edge picture quality and a best-in-class smart TV user experience attainable for everyone," said Bill Baxter, CTO, Vizio. "We're excited with the performance improvements that our new IQ video processors and ProGaming Engine bring to our 2020 lineup, especially when combined with Vizio TVs that offer the highest performance Quantum Color and peak brightness in the industry. Plus, utilizing the new processing power to optimize the strengths of OLED picture quality proves that Vizio's leadership in the TV industry has never been stronger." Vizio also announced new P9, M8, M7, and V5 LCD ranges spanning 40 to 75 inches. The P9 features up to 240 dimming zones, while the other TV ranges feature less.

Gaming features

Vizio says that its entire 2020 line-up announced at CES will feature HDMI 2.1 but only the P9 and PX LCD ranges will feature up to 120Hz for HDMI VRR (Variable Refresh Rate). The TVs also support HDMI eARC. AMD FreeSync will be supported from M7 and up as part of the 'ProGaming Engine' that additionally covers Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), Auto Game Mode, and low input lag. Like other TV brands, Vizio is embracing a number of new gaming-related features to make its TVs compatible with the new video systems in next generation game consoles such as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Competing brands are also advertising support for HDMI 2.1 VRR, FreeSync or G-Sync. Lastly, Vizio said that the TVs will come with Filmmaker Mode, Apple AirPlay 2, HomeKit as well as SmartCast 4.0, the latest version of its smart TV platform, and a new voice-enabled remote control. Pricing and availability details will be announced closer to launch.
