Google is reportedly working on "heads-up displays" (HUDs), a type of display glasses that show information on the inside and communicates with the user’s smartphone.

One source indicates that Google has developed a prototype. It looks very similar to typical thick-rimmed glasses that “normal people” could wear. On the arms there are a few discreet buttons but besides that the prototype could be mistaken for ordinary glasses.

According 9to5google.com it is not an accessory device exclusive for Android smartphones but instead a technology that will be licensed to other companies, and a device that communicates with smartphones and Google’s own cloud services.

Futuristic concepts like those in Minority Report may be closer than we imagine

One example is the use of location services that would allow a user to receive route directions or information about the surroundings – in a manner that is invisible to people around the user. If we take the concept one step further, one could imagine a type of augmented reality.

The technology has not been detailed but it is plausible that transparent OLED display panels will be used. Google has not commented on the rumor. According to other reports, Google is also working on driverless cars and other concepts in the Google X labs.
