Samsung has been working hard to ramp up their OLED capacity with a new 5.5. generation OLED factory. Samsung is now reporting that the first phase of the OLED plant is ready for mass production. With the new factory Samsung is able to produce OLED panels for tablets, PC monitors and TVs. Samsung has invested more than 2 billion dollars in the factory.

Samsung is currently producing OLED panels for smartphones, but the capacity is so limited that only Samsung’s own phones benefit from the OLED technology that is widely considered the future of display technology.

But capacity is now ramped up with Samsung's new 5.5. generation OLED factory. The first stage at the plant is ready for mass production and Samsung plans to make an official opening ceremony in the start of June 2011. That also means that plans are two months ahead of schedule.
Production capacity to increase further
In phase 1 Samsung can produce 24,000 substrates (1300x1500 mm) per month. These substrates are cut into smaller OLED panels. In phase 2 the monthly production is increased to 48,000 substrates and in phase three, that is scheduled for the first half of 2012, Samsung can ramp up output to 100,000 substrates.

Samsung previously announced that they are planning a 7-inch OLED panel for tablets in 2011 and there has been talk about 42-inch OLED TVs by 2011. But we have seen plans slide many times before.
The factory, located in the Chungcheong Province in China, might later be supplemented by even larger OLED factories from Samsung. Rumors say that Samsung also plans to invest in a 8G OLED factory later in 2011 that produces much larger 8G substrates, allowing OLED-TVs to materialize.
LG also invests heavily in OLED technology. They already have a 31-inch OLED-TV in stores.
