Google has purchased HTPC software company SageTV. This move could mean that features such as DVR (recording) and placeshifting will make it to the next generation of Google TV.

Google and SageTV has issued an official statement saying that Google has purchased the HTPC maker that has developed media center software since 2002.

The acquisition is seen as a step towards the next generation of Google TV. The Google TV box was announced last year but has not been very popular. At CES 2011 a range of TV manufactures were rumored to announce Google TV based HDTVs but they failed to materialize. Insiders suggested that Google had put the Google TV on hold until they could improve the internet connected box.
Google has not said specifically why or how they intend to use SageTV’s technology but SageTV is known for media center, DVR and placeshifting functionality for PCs, MACs and Linux. Last year SageTV also announced their SageTV HD Extender.
In the official press release, Google says:
- “The SageTV team has developed the latest in media management software, and we look forward to working with them to take this technology to the next level.”
So, maybe a new Google TV box with select SageTV features at CES 2012? We think that it might be a possibility. We will keep you updated with more information as soon as possible.
