Panasonic to build OLED-TVs?

According to reports in Japan, Panasonic has started to build an 8.5 generation OLED-TV production plant in Himeji, Japan. At first, Panasonic aims to set up one 8.5G pilot line.

Panasonic to build OLED-TVs

Samsung and LG have already set up OLED production plants and aim to introduce OLED-TVs in 2012. Their Japanese competitor in the TV business, Panasonic, seems to be preparing for OLED-TV production as well.

Asahi.com says that Panasonic has ordered equipment for a pilot 8.5G OLED production line. An 8.5G production line can efficiently produce up to 55-60 inch TVs. However, at this stage Panasonic is planning to run internal tests with a single production line. For full mass production scale, Panasonic needs more production lines.

Panasonic’s current Himeji plant is producing LCDs but it might be converted to an OLED line in the future if they decide to switch to OLED-TV production.

Panasonic recently teased a smartphone with an OLED panel, which indicate their interest in the technology. The company is also producing OLED lighting solutions such as the one seen above.
