Sharp shows off flexible OLEDs & 32" 4K monitor

Sharp had brought a range of interesting things at CES, including new Ultra HD TVs. Sharp also exhibited new technology such as flexible OLED displays for smartphones and a 32” 4K monitor.

Sharp exhibited its flexible OLED displays prior to CES but this was the first time that we had a chance to take a look. The OLED displays are certainly impressive, and it signals a future where screens get thinner, flexible and more durable. Imagine the possibilities.

The display is 3.4 inches large and can bend even further than shown in the picture above. Despite it being flexible it still delivers great picture quality with a 540x960 pixel resolution. That compares to the same pixel density as modern smartphones.

The display can bend in all directions and above you see how only the corner is bending.

Sharp also has plans to produce a “10-inch” flexible OLED display, optimized for tablets. The OLED displays are all produced with Sharp’s IGZO method.

Sharp also exhibited a 32-inch monitor with a resolution of 3840x2160 pixels - also called 4K. Sharp will begin selling the monitors to professional customers in the near future but unfortunately no plans for the consumer market were announced.

At Sharp’s booth they had a demonstration of the 4K monitor next to a 32-inch monitor. On both panels, Sharp had a spreadsheet with very tiny numbers. The 4K monitor had crisp, easily readable fonts. It was impossible to discern the fonts on the Full HD monitor.
