Samsung brings more 4K content to its UHD TVs

28 Aug 2014 | Rasmus Larsen |

Samsung has partnered with several streaming services to bring more 4K content to its Smart TVs. Amazon’s 4K streaming service will launch globally in October, and several local 4K services will introduce 4K streaming soon.

Samsung promises more 4K content

With no 4K Blu-ray standard on the market, Netflix is one of the only places where owners of Ultra HD TVs can enjoy 4K content. But Samsung promises more.

Samsung UHD partners

Amazon will launch a 4K video on demand service globally in October, and the app will be available on Samsung’s UHD Smart TVs. Amazon’s Prime streaming service is currently available in the US, the UK, Japan, and Germany, so it is unclear what Samsung means by “globally”. Other partners who will bring 4K content to Samsung's Smart TVs include maxdome in Germany, Wuaki.tv in Spain/UK, and Chili in Italy.

In Europe, Samsung will also offer concerts in 4K resolution through the Vienna Opera app. 10 performances have been planned for the 2014/15 season. Samsung once again mentions its plans to release a UHD hard drive with movies from Hollywood studios, but no details were provided.

In addition, Samsung says that they are working with SCSA (Secure Content Storage Association) to develop a secure storage standard that allows companies to create a 4K movie download service that relies on a USB hard drive connected to the TV.

Samsung will demonstrate some of its partnerships at IFA 2014 next week.
