Hollywood and the TV industry form UHD Alliance

06 Jan 2015 | Rasmus Larsen |

At CES 2015, TV manufacturers, Hollywood and other partners announced the UHD Alliance. The goal is to set standards for a 4K and higher resolutions, HDR, wider color gamuts and immersive audio.

”This is a game changer”

The 4K ecosystem is still weak so Dolby, LG, Netflix, Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, Disney, Twentieth Century Fox, Warner Bros and more have formed the UHD Alliance.

“The UHD Alliance was created with the consumer in mind, providing information on premium Ultra-HD content and devices to ensure everyone has access to the best home entertainment. The Alliance is also focused on helping people benefit from a seamless, integrated and high-quality Ultra-HD ecosystem. Premium Ultra-HD content and devices will be clearly identified so people can easily recognise them in-store.”

The goal is to get some 4K content out there fast and in the best possible way, so the alliance is incorporating every link in the chain from production, distribution and consumption on playback devices. On stage, Samsung’s H.S. Kim said “this is a game changer”.

The group hopes to incorporate not only 4K and higher resolution but also HDR (high dynamic range), wider color gamuts (Rec.2020 was not mentioned) and immersive audio. There is no mention of HFR (high frame rate) but we assume that it will be taken into consideration, too.

In the coming months, the group will announce more details and a roadmap. The group met in late 2014 and expect to see the first results in 2015. Now let us have some more UHD content please!
