Sony unveiled its Project Morpheus one year ago. Morpheus is a virtual reality headset for your PlayStation 4. Today, Sony unveiled a new version with an OLED display and announced that the consumer version will launch in the first half of 2016.
Coming in the first half of 2016
Sony has announced new details and a shipping date for its VR headset for PlayStation 4. It is still called Project Morpheus, but it is unclear if that will be the final name when the product starts shipping.
- “Our goal with VR is to deliver a sense of presence, making the player feel as though they’ve stepped inside the world of a game. The new Project Morpheus prototype brings us closer to that goal, as it improves the visual experience and tracking accuracy, both of which are critical to achieving sense of presence.” says Sony.

The new prototype version now uses a 5.7-inch OLED display, instead of the slower LCD display in the first prototype. It has a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels and is said to expand the field of view – what you see inside the headset. Last year, a source told media that the final version will likely use 2560x1440 pixels.
Sony goes on to say that it refreshes at 120 Hz (double compared to first version) and that it is a low-persistence screen that removes motion blur. It will have a latency of less than 18ms, which is about half of the first headset. Lastly, Sony mentions more accurate tracking for a 360-degree experience. All in all, it sounds very promising.
Sony also announced that it has sold through 20 million PlayStation 4 consoles.
Sony will share more details later, and show the first VR games at the E3 convention later this year.
