The new Star Trek TV series will premiere in January 2017 and Netflix will be the exclusive home in 188 countries (USA and Canada excluded). The major deal will also secure Netflix the rights to stream all existing 727 episodes of Star Trek.
Enterprise lands on Netflix
The new episodes of Star Trek will be produced by CBS Studios, and CBS will retain the rights to stream it in the US (and Bell Media in Canada) through CBS All Access. In almost every other country of the world – China, North Korea and Syria excluded – Netflix will have the exclusive rights to the new episodes, the two companies confirmed today.
This will make the new Star Trek series a global event. The deal also underlines Netflix’s position as the world’s first global TV provider.
- “The launch of the new ‘Star Trek’ will truly be a global television event,” said Armando Nuńez, CEO hos CBS Studios International.
New episodes of Star Trek will premiere in January 2017. The series is produced by Alex Kurtzman and Bryan Fuller. Episodes will be available for streaming on Netflix “within 24 hours of the US premiere”.
Netflix will also get the rights to stream the full back catalogue of Star Trek TV series, including ’Star Trek: The Original Series’, ’Star Trek: The Next Generation’, ’Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’, ’Star Trek: Voyager’ og ’Star Trek: Enterprise’. All 727 episodes will be added to Netflix in late 2016.
On a related note, Deadline reports that a fourth Star Trek movie has been greenlit. The date of the theatrical release has yet to be set.
