Along with Samsung, Panasonic was the first manufacturer to launch an UHD Blu-ray player with UB900. The new UB700 is a more affordable version without analog audio outputs. It will sell for 550 Euro.
Panasonic DMP-UB700 UHD Blu-ray
We had figured that Panasonic wanted to unveil a new UHD Blu-ray player at IFA 2016 when it announced the UB90 in Japan. Outside Japan, the new more affordable disc spinner will be called DMP-UB700, Panasonic has announced today.
UB700 obviously supports the full UHD Blu-ray specification, meaning Ultra HD resolution, HDR (high dynamic range), wide color gamut (Rec.2020), 10-bit, and more. UB700 has been “Ultra HD Premium” approved, and will also spin “old” HD Blu-ray, 3D HD Blu-ray, DVD, and CD. It has two HDMI outputs; one for video and one for audio.
The difference between the current UB900 and the new UB700 is that the latter lacks analog audio outputs and THX certification. It has a less premium design, a different remote, and a slightly less powerful chroma processor.
UB700 supports photos in JPEG and videos in MP4 from a camera in 4K resolution, says Panasonic.
Additionally, UB700 has apps for Netflix and YouTube. Panasonic confirms that it can stream 4K from both streaming services (via HEVC and VP9 decoding). It is not clear if it will support HDR streaming from Netflix, too. Panasonic has planned a firmware update for the high-end UB900 to enable Netflix’s HDR so it is possible that the same update will come to UB700.
Panasonic DMP-UB700 will be available in Europe this October for 550 Euro / Ł400. No launch details were announced for the US.
