Paid apps on LG webOS
Paid apps were already supported in select countries but from a developer’s point of view, webOS has not exactly, to date, felt like a big opportunity. LG hopes to change that.
As of today, developers can release paid apps and games on LG's webOS TVs around the world. LG says that “customers can enjoy a larger selection of paid content globally” in "over 200 countries” with support for “more than 140 different payment methods ". There are 196 official countries in the world today.
- “By collaborating with Paymentwall, we’re able to evolve the smart TV purchasing experience on the LG webOS platform much faster than if we had worked alone,” said Brian Kwon, CEO at LG Home Entertainment. “This partnership is another example of how LG’s collaborative effort has elevated us into one of the leaders in the global smart TV industry.”

In the app store on your webOS TV you can enter credit card details. LG further says that webOS will allow you to pay for TV apps via your PC, tablet or smartphone using QR codes and other initiatives.
webOS is LG’s TV platform. It was first introduced in 2014 and has since powered LG’s TVs from the 2014, 2015 and 2016 line-ups. webOS reached version 3.0 earlier this year but only 2016 models run the latest software version.
Competing TV platforms from Apple (tvOS) and Google (Android TV) already allow developers to release paid - and free - apps and games.
