Samsung has failed to take action so Oculus has had to step in with a forced software update that disables Gear VR functionality on Samsung’s exploding Galaxy Note 7.
Oculus has stepped in
There have been over 100 cases of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 devices bursting into flames or exploding. The phone can now no longer be used to enjoy virtual reality in the Gear VR headset that was developed in a partnership between Samsung and Oculus.
Owners of Gear VR are being met with the following message:
- “Customer safety is Oculus' top priority. Oculus is removing support for all Note7 devices on the Oculus platform. Until further notice, Note7 devices will not be compatible with the Gear VR. For more information regarding the Note7, please contact Samsung directly,”
Samsung has failed to take action despite the danger of using a potentially exploding Note 7 in a headset strapped to the face. Instead, Oculus has been forced to step in.
Oculus has pushed out a forced software update that makes it impossible to use the Gear VR with a Galaxy Note 7. Gear VR still works with other Galaxy phones.
"Safe" Note 7 phones are exploding
Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 7 in August and soon after reports of phones bursting into flames started appearing online. Since then more than 100 cases have been reported in the US alone. Samsung recalled Note 7 in September and started issuing “safe” replacement units.
Over the last couple of days, the “safe” Note 7 devices have started exploding, too, and Samsung has finally halted production of the defective phone. Samsung urges all owners to turn off their phone immediately and return it.
Users on reddit began receiving the message that Note 7 would no longer work with Gear VR earlier today. The website AndroidCentral has confirmed that it applies to its Note 7, too.
Samsung has not commented on whether owners of Gear VR headsets can get a refund.
