In 2011 LG released their Cinema 3D TVs that utilize cheap polarized 3D glasses. Now LG has teamed up with designer Alain Mikli to supply a pair of exclusive 3D glasses that double as sunglasses.

You don’t have to look ridiculous to enjoy 3D – so says Alain Mikli and LG.

LG has teamed up with French designer Alain Mikli to create these good-looking polarized 3D glasses. With over 30 years of history and tradition, French designer Alain Mikli is a well-known person in the industry.

But there is more to it than meets the eye and the 3D glasses double as sunglasses. A built-in UV filter makes sure to block the sun when wearing the glasses outside. You can literally walk into the movie theater with your sunglasses, enjoy the 3D movie and still look like a beach boy.

The glasses are extremely low-weight and made from steel and plastic. The nose fitters are ergonomically designed to provide comfort – even outside.

LG’s designer 3D glasses work with Cinema 3D TVs such as the LW6500 (review here). Cinema 3D is a new 3D technology based on the same system that movie theaters use. The advantages are: zero crosstalk, no flicker, no batteries and no eye strain. Cinema 3D reduces 3D resolution a bit but we have found the practical impact to be very limited.

The glasses also work in most movie theaters. On LG’s active 3D plasma-TVs you still require 3D glasses with batteries.

The sunglasses / 3D glasses are sold separately. Price: 350 USD – but that also gives you a pair of designer sunglasses. LG’s standard polarized 3D glasses are sold for around 1-5 USD.
