In 2012, Samsung promised to keep upgrading its high-end Smart TVs each year with a so-called Evolution Kit. The first Evolution Kit has been announced at CES 2013 as a small, black box with quad-core processor that connects to the back of the TV. FlatpanelsHD saw it in action.

Samsung's Evolution Kit

It is a good idea. Instead of leaving Smart TV customers behind each year, Samsung lets customers upgrade with a so-called Evolution Kit. But Samsung has to keep this promise over the long term - so far they are on the right track.

FlatpanelsHD had the Evolution Kit demonstrated at CES, and it is very straightforward. The Evolution Kit is a small black box that can be mounted on the back of the TV with a cable running to the dedicated Evolution Kit connector. It works on the ES7000, ES8000 & ES9000 LEDs, and the E8005 & E7000 plasmas. The first time you power up your TV after connecting the Evolution Kit, the TV will load the new platform which takes approximately 15-20 seconds.

Quad-core processor & new remote

Evolution Kit has a quad-core processor inside, similar to what is found in the new 2013 Smart TVs. This will improve navigation speed with a factor 3, Samsung says. The Evolution Kit will also offer the improved voice and gesture controls via a new remote control with built-in microphone.

The Evolution Kits will come each year, up until 2016. Samsung cannot guarantee that all features can be upgraded as some are built into the actual TVs.

The Evolution Kit is expected to be available around spring to summer 2013. Pricing details have not been announced yet.
