Philips unveils unique DesignLine TV

15 Mar 2013 | Rasmus Larsen |

Philips has unveiled a new, unique design TV in the DesignLine. The TV has no stand but instead leans up against the back wall. The elegant glass TV is transparent at the bottom and fades into black at the top. It is part of the 8000 series and offers Smart TV features, and more.

Philips’ new DesignLine TV is quite spectacular. Philips moves away from the usual TV design norms and has created a TV without a base. Instead the TV is the base. Philips believes that the new design will be a hit in modern residential areas.

The TV is made from one piece of glass that is transparent at the bottom, fading into black at the top. The TV has no visible frame around the glass but only a narrow edge around the TV panel. Behind the TV Philips has implemented a three-sided Ambilight system that illuminates the back wall by following the on-screen colors - or as a pure white light.

Smart TV, Multiroom and Miracast

The DesignLine is part of Philips’ 8000 series and packs the latest picture technology from Philips. The panel is powered by the Perfect Pixel HD engine and Philips advertises a 1400 Hz PMR (Perfect Motion Rate) system. It also has built-in active 3D technology.

Philips’ Smart TV Premium platform offers access to TV apps and services, such as Netflix. Miracast is implemented, allowing Android users to stream video, images and photos to the TV screen from an Android smartphone or tablet (with Android 4.0 or newer). Lastly, Philips mentions the USB recording feature and the new Multi-room feature that allows users to stream TV channels to other Philips TVs in the home or to smartphones and tablets running Android or iOS via the MyRemote app. WiFi is built in.

The remote control is made from brushed aluminum and has the same exclusive feel as the TV, says Philips. On the back side it has a full QWERTY keyboard for in-app search queries, but you can also opt to use a smartphone or tablet via the MyRemote app.
