Panasonic’s first 2015 TVs with Firefox OS are now shipping in Europe. The TVs will launch globally “in the coming months”, says Panasonic.
Firefox OS and Ultra HD
Panasonic believes that Ultra HD is the future, and it has acknowledged that it needs help to develop a TV operating system, so it has turned to Mozilla and Firefox OS. The new operating system will be available in all of the new Ultra HD models.
The curved TVs are still not available but most of the flat TVs are now shipping in Europe. Panasonic says the global launch is expected “in the coming months”. The new CX740/CX750 TVs use IPS LCD panels, whereas the other CX8, CX7, and CX6 models use VA LCD panels. The TVs also offer HEVC and VP9 decoding for 4K streaming, and the high-end models support HDR (high dynamic range).
- “Through our partnership with Mozilla and the openness and flexibility of Firefox OS, we have been able to create a more user friendly and customizable TV UI. This allows us to provide a better user experience for our consumers providing a differentiator in the Smart TV market,” said Masahiro Shinada, Director of TV at Panasonic.
