At IFA, Philips is launching its two new TV models in the 8 series. The TVs are characterized by minimalist and elegant design, Ultra HD resolution and Android TV. One model has a unique speaker solution.
A flat and a curved
FlatpanelsHD revealed the first details on these two new TVs in May and at IFA 2015 Philips will unveil the TVs to the worls. The new 8700 and 8600 models will expands Philips’ 2015 line-up that is rolling out now after months of delays.
8700 is curved and 8600 is flat. They both offer Ultra HD resolution. Like most other new TVs from Philips, these models are based on Google’s “Android TV” operating system, which offers access to TV channels, apps, music, and games. The storage space is only 16GB but you can extend it by an additional 128GB by connecting a USB device. 4K content can be streamed from Netflix via HEVC decoding and from YouTube via VP9 decoding. The TVs also come with built-in Google Cast, which is the protocol used inside Chromecast.
Ambilight and an elegant design
The design is minimalistic with thin bezels, a slim profile and an elegant polished steel base. Despite the thinness, Philips has managed to cram in twin-tuners, making it possible to record one channel while watching another. The TV also come equipped with Philips’ signature feature Ambilight; 3-sided in 8700 and 4-sided in 8600. Ambilight can play along to Spotify or extend to Hue lamps in your living room.
Notice the speakers on each side of 8600. These are actually detachable and wireless. You can choose to either attach them to the sides of the TV or place them on a floor stand that will be offered an optional solution.
Philips is bundling its new "Premium remote", which combines a myriad of buttons with a touch pad and a full keyboard on the back.
