The new Spotify app can be used with both a free or premium subscription plan. It works on Samsung Smart TVs running the Tizen operating system.
Spotify on Samsung Smart TV
Spotify launched its first app on Samsung Smart TV in 2012. It works with TVs running the old Smart Hub platform. Today, Spotify has launched a new app for the 2015 and 2016 Samsung Smart TVs. These are TVs running on the new Tizen operating system.
The app works for everyone whether you are on the premium or free subscription plan. If you are on the free plan you will obviously have to endure ads while listening. The company says that the app is easy to navigate on the TV screen and that it offers access to over 30 million songs.
The app also supports Spotify Connect, allowing you to use your phone, tablet or PC to control music playback on the TV.
It is available on 2015 and 2016 Samsung Smart TVs that can be identified with the following model numbers:
2015: JU and JS (eg. 55JS9000)
2016: KU and KS (eg. 55KS8000)
Samsung Smart TVs from 2014 or earlier will continue to offer to old Spotify app that works only with a premium subscription. The company tells us to expect "additional updates coming soon."
If your TV is connected to the best speakers in the house but you do not own a recent Samsung Smart TV, you can also use Spotify via Chromecast, PlayStation or Android TV.
