Apple’s tvOS 11.3 adds automatic frame rate switching on the Apple TV4 and makes Apple TV 4K compatible with Sony’s Dolby Vision implementation. Support for Airplay 2 is not included.
The ”match content” feature that was added to Apple TV 4K recently is now also available for the previous version of the box. It will automatically switch the frame rate output to match that of the video content.
Both players now also support this type of automatic switching for Airplay video sessions.
Furthermore, Apple is expanding its ’TV’ app to Brazil and Mexico. Siri now speaks portuguese in Brazil.
Sony's Dolby Vision profile
While this is not mentioned in the official notes, tvOS 11.3 makes Apple TV 4K compatible with Sony’s Dolby Vision implementation in TVs. Sony has opted for a new Dolby Vision profile that requires playback devices connected via HDMI to do more of the Dolby Vision processing.
With version 11.3, Apple is introducing a new privacy icon along with detailed information about how your personal data is been used. The privacy icon will show up every time and Apple app or feature is requesting personal information.
Airplay 2 is not included with this release. It briefly showed up in the early beta version but was ultimately pulled. The wireless audio protocol was first announced in June 2017.
tvOS 11.3 is free to download and available now for Apple TV4 and Apple TV 4K.
