Amazon Alexa comes to LG 2018 OLED & LCD TVs

30 May 2018 | Rasmus Larsen |

LG has announced that its 2018 TVs now support Amazon Alexa voice commands. The announcement comes just one month after LG added Google Assistant compatibility.

Control your TV with Alexa

The collaboration between Amazon and LG will enable users to control 2018 LG OLED and "Super UHD" LCD TVs via voice commands to existing Alexa-enabled Echo devices.

LG explains that Alexa voice commands can be used to control “TV functions including volume, play, pause, start, stop, fast forward controls, channel selection and content search”. You can use commands such as "Alexa, change the channel to CNN on my kitchen TV" or "Alexa, ask LG to launch YouTube on my bedroom TV".

- "The addition of Amazon Alexa compatibility to our 2018 LG AI-enabled TVs spotlights LG's commitment to developing category-leading TVs that combine innovative technologies with the widest range of convenient, user-friendly interfaces," said Tim Alessi, head of home entertainment product marketing at LG Electronics USA. "LG's open platform-open partnership- open connectivity ecosystem enables LG AI products to work with the most popular smart platforms to deliver the most convenient and customized smart home experience tailored to a consumer's specific lifestyle."

LG’s 2018 TVs also support Google Assistant, which has been integrated deeper into the TVs. While Alexa requires an Amazon Echo device, Google Assistant can be activated directly from the TV’s remote control and can be used to search for content from multiple streaming services.

Voice assistant support is not coming to previous LG OLED or LCD TVs.

LG’s TVs are still based on webOS rather than Google or Amazon’s TV platforms – Android TV and FireTV, respectively. The voice commands are added on top of webOS.

To enable Alexa integration with your 2018 LG OLED TV you first need to download the ‘LG SmartThinQ Skill’ for Amazon Alexa.
