Vizio starts rolling out Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support

01 Aug 2019 | Rasmus Larsen |

Vizio has started rolling out Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support to "millions" of SmartCast 3.0 TVs dating back to 2016.

Vizio TVs from 2016 and later

Unlike LG and Sony, Vizio is not limiting Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support to its latest and greatest TVs. The company will bring the features to TVs dating back to 2016 but expects the rollout to take several months. With AirPlay 2 users can push video, music, photos and other media content from an iPhone, iPad or Mac wirelessly onto the TV, opening the door to far more streaming content on Vizio TVs, including movies and TV shows from iTunes in up to 4K Dolby Vision video quality.

HomeKit is Apple's platform for the connected home that allows users to control certain aspects of the TV. With AirPlay 2 and HomeKit in a TV, the user can also use Siri voice commands to control the TV. - "SmartCast 3.0 is full of added value for Vizio customers. With both AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support, users can now share movies, TV shows, music and more from their favorite apps, including the Apple TV app, directly to SmartCast TVs, and enable TV controls through the Home app and Siri," said Bill Baxter, Chief Technology Officer, Vizio. "We are thrilled to offer an even more compelling value proposition to our users with a smart TV experience that supports all three major voice assistants. This broad range of compatibility enables Vizio SmartCast to seamlessly integrate into any household with Siri, Google Assistant or Alexa – giving users more ways to sit back and enjoy the entertainment they love."

Besides Vizio, LG, Samsung and Sony will support AirPlay 2. LG and Sony will also support HomeKit, while Samsung was first to bring Apple's TV app to TVs. The new Apple TV app is coming to TVs from other manufacturers, including Vizio, later this year.
