An update for the Apple TV app on LG TVs has added support for Dolby Atmos audio. Atmos is now also supported over AirPlay 2.
Atmos in Apple TV app
After the Apple TV app launched on LG's webOS platform in February 2020, users started complaining about missing support for Dolby Atmos. In response, Apple and LG promised to add Atmos via a later update.
As of version 1.0.22 of the Apple TV app for LG's webOS-based TVs, Dolby Atmos is supported.
Atmos is also supported over AirPlay 2, meaning that if you start playback of an Atmos-enabled movie on an iPhone or iPad and then push it to the TV via AirPlay, it will play in 4K Dolby Vision and Atmos.
The Apple TV app is also available on Samsung's Tizen-based TVs as well as select Roku and FireTV devices but it is not yet clear if the latest app update enables Atmos on these platforms. If you have access to a compatible device, please let us know in the comments section. The app will come later this year to select Sony and Vizio TVs.
Besides Apple TV+ shows like See, The Morning Show, and For All Mankind, the Apple TV app (iTunes) currently offers more than 360 films in Atmos. You can find a full list here.
