As Google prepares to shut down Play Music it is rolling out wider support for YouTube Music, which is now folded into the YouTube app on Android TV, although with limitations.

There is now a Music tab inside the YouTube app on Android TV devices, including Sony, Philips, TCL and Sharp TVs as well as Nvidia Shield. It lets you access some parts of your YouTube Music subscription; playlists, 'Your Mix', 'Discover Mix', and more.

However, as noted by Android Police, the implementation has many shortcomings. Support is missing for background playback, shuffle/repeat, full library access, synchronized lyrics, and other features.

You can access the Music tab without a subscription, with ads and limited access to only the most popular tracks that are available on YouTube as music videos. A subscription plan will give you full access.

In recent years, music streaming services have made their ways to TV devices. Spotify is available as an app for Smart TVs, consoles, and Apple TV, whereas Apple Music recently made its way to the first non-Apple TV device with the launch of the app on some Samsung TVs.

A dedicated YouTube Music app would probably have been a better solution but for now Google's music streaming service is available as part of YouTube on Android TV.
